Momentum Life vs Chubb: Compare life, funeral and other cover
Compare Momentum Life vs Chubb across life, funeral and other types of cover with end-of-life or bereavement benefits. Contact us for free advice & quotes.
Momentum Life vs Chubb is a closer contest than most funeral cover comparisons. Both insurers sell a genuine standalone funeral policy, and both accept you with no health questions. Both also pay only for accidental death in the first 24 months.
So you are not choosing between two kinds of product. You are choosing between two policies that look alike, and differ in the details that decide what gets paid.
Those details are entry age, premiums, and what happens if a death is accidental. Policywise advises on Chubb Life. We cannot advise on Momentum Life, which is not on our panel.
- Both are standalone funeral policies with a 24-month accidental-only window and a $30,000 cap per person.
- Momentum Life accepts ages 40 to 75 and triples the benefit for accidental death. Chubb publishes 50 to 80.
- Momentum Life's premiums stop at the 89th birthday and Chubb's at the 90th, and cover continues for life on both policies.
- Policywise is disclosed to advise on Chubb Life for life and disability cover, and is not on Momentum Life's panel at all.

Momentum Life vs Chubb Life: which is a better fit for you?
Momentum Life fits you if you are aged 40 to 75, or if you want the chance of a tripled payout for accidental death. Chubb Life fits you if you are aged 50 to 80, or want premiums to stop if you move into long-term care.
On the funeral product itself, neither insurer is clearly ahead. The differences sit at the edges: who can still apply, what an accident pays, and what happens to premiums in your late 80s.
Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited is the licensed life insurer here. It is a separate company from Chubb's general insurance arm, which is out of scope.
Momentum Life and Chubb Life side by side
Momentum Life sells three products, and Chubb Life sells funeral cover alongside two separate life ranges.

How you buy: direct, or through an adviser
Momentum Life is explicit about its own limits. Its site states that "any advice provided is limited to the products we offer", and its Disclosure Statement sends customers elsewhere for advice on cover held with another insurer.
That follows from Momentum Life being a direct insurer rather than an advice business. It does mean nobody there can tell you whether another insurer would cover you better.
Chubb is reachable both ways. Its corporate page names Independent Financial Advisers as a channel for its funeral insurance, alongside its own advisers and online channels. Its contact page offers you the choice of either. Within Chubb's own range, Life & Living is self-serve, and Assurance Extra is adviser-assisted.
Policywise is one of those independent advisers, disclosed to advise on Chubb for life and disability policies. You can schedule a callback with Policywise to help compare Chubb against the other insurers on its panel, help with the underwriting, and stay with you at claim time.
Maximum entry age, and when cover ends
Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance accepts New Zealanders aged 40 to 75, and Chubb's website states 50 to 80, though Chubb's own policy wording sets no maximum entry age at all. On when cover ends: both insurers stop charging premiums in your 90th year, and the cover itself continues for life on both policies.
Momentum Life's own wording, product page, and FAQ all state 40 to 75. On the other hand, while it is not explicitly stated in their website and official document, Chubb highlights guaranteed acceptance if you’re aged 50–80.
Between them the two bands leave only one insurer open to you at either end. If you are 40 to 49, Momentum Life will consider you and Chubb's published band will not. If you are 76 to 80, the reverse applies.
Premiums stop at a similar age on both policies, and cover does not. Momentum Life stops charging premiums from the 89th birthday, and the cover continues for life.
Chubb's premiums stop at the earliest of the 90th birthday or an accepted Long-Term Care Premium Waiver; its wording lists no age-related cover-cessation clause, so cover continues for life too.
The one real difference is the waiver itself: Chubb offers a way to stop premiums earlier than 90 if you move into long-term care, and Momentum Life does not.
Funeral insurance vs life insurance
Funeral insurance pays a small fixed lump sum intended for final expenses. Life insurance pays a larger amount you choose, which your family can put towards a mortgage, debts, or lost income as well as the funeral.
The Financial Markets Authority treats life insurance as the umbrella term, with income protection inside it. The funeral insurance guide covers the funeral side in full, and life insurance covers the other.
The Ombudsman is direct about what a funeral policy is not. It is a risk product, not a savings plan. Cover lapses if you stop paying, and as people age the total premiums paid can exceed the amount that would be paid out. Both insurers say the same in their own wordings.
In one Ombudsman example, a consumer who arranged $20,000 of funeral cover in 2010 had paid more than $20,000 in premiums by 2020. The Ombudsman upheld her complaint and the insurer cancelled the policy and refunded every premium paid, though it notes that outcome is not guaranteed for everyone.
Where funeral cover falls short: illness, cancer and lost income
A funeral payout only arrives after a death, so it does nothing during the years you may live with a serious illness. Public accident cover does not fill that gap.
The Accident Compensation Act 2001 defines personal injury as an injury-anchored list with no illness category. It expressly excludes anything caused wholly or substantially by a gradual process, disease, infection, or ageing.
That is the legal reason illness cover here is bought privately. More New Zealanders are being diagnosed with cancer each year, and more are living for years afterwards. In fact, Te Aho o Te Kahu projects annual cancer diagnoses rising from over 30,000 in 2025 to more than 45,000 by 2044, and five-year net survival has improved from 58% to 68%.
Three kinds of cover deal with the living years rather than the funeral:
- Trauma insurance, also called critical illness cover, pays a lump sum on diagnosis of a specified serious condition, including most cancers.
- Income protection replaces part of your income while you cannot work.
- Total and permanent disability cover pays a lump sum if you are unlikely to work again.
Whether you need any of them depends on your situation rather than a rule. But it’s important to note that Momentum Life sells none of them. Its Quick Life and Platinum Life pay on death or terminal illness, and its Funeral Insurance pays only on death. Chubb does sell critical illness and income cover, which is why this comparison does not stop at funeral money.
How to choose between Momentum Life and Chubb Life
Three things separate the two funeral policies: your age at application, what an accidental death pays in the first 24 months, and when premiums stop.
Two further differences sit above the product itself: who can advise you across more than one insurer, and how much weight you give each insurer's own financial position. Inflation is not one of these differences, since it affects both policies equally, but it is a reason to think about funeral cover at all.
A fixed funeral benefit loses buying power the longer you hold it, and neither funeral wording indexes. The same Stats NZ basket that read 714.55 in the June 2001 quarter read 1,359 in the June 2026 quarter, and annual inflation was 4.1% in the year to June 2026. The official benchmarks for death costs have moved the same way: the statutory Work and Income Funeral Grant maximum is $2,697.43 from 1 April 2026.
That grant is a hardship cap on what the Ministry of Social Development will meet, not a measured average funeral bill. ACC pays a separate grant where a death resulted from a covered accident, set at the lesser of the actual cost or a base $4,500, adjusted periodically under the Act.
There is no official New Zealand average funeral cost at all, because Stats NZ publishes no separate funeral weight.
On the advice point, the FMA says an adviser should keep in touch over time and help if something goes wrong. The adviser must also give priority to your interests where there is a conflict. Sorted, run by Te Ara Ahunga Ora, suggests speaking to an adviser rather than relying on an online comparison site.
One small thing an adviser checks is who the money goes to. In one Ombudsman case on a $25,000 funeral policy, the daughter's claim was not upheld, because she had not named herself beneficiary and could not prove she was the estate's executor.
Talk to a Policywise adviser if you want Chubb's life and disability cover quoted against the rest of Policywise's panel; Policywise cannot do that for Momentum Life.
How Momentum Life and Chubb Life compare as companies
Both hold an active FMA Financial Institutions licence granted on 31 March 2025, and past that the two are not comparable in scale. Chubb Life's New Zealand entity was incorporated in 1967. Momentum Life describes itself as established in 2018.
Key facts about Momentum Life: who holds the licence and who underwrites the cover
Momentum Life Limited holds the licence and underwrites its own current policies. It is FSP472286, with an active Financial Institutions licence granted 31 March 2025, with the registered office Floor 7, Tower 1, 205 Queen Street, Auckland Central.
Three dates are often blurred into one:
- 13 November 2015 is its registration date on the Financial Service Providers Register.
- 12 March 2018 is when Momentum Life says it was issued a life insurance licence, becoming the underwriter of its future products.
- 31 March 2025 is the FMA conduct licence above.
If you bought a Momentum Life policy before 14 March 2018, Momentum Life is not your insurer. Its own FAQ states that policies purchased before that date are insured by Fidelity Life Assurance Company Limited. That legacy book now trades as NZ Cover Direct.
Its wording is explicit that Momentum Life was the distributor and never the insurer, and that claims are Fidelity Life's responsibility. It's worth checking your policy schedule before assuming who you would claim from.
Ownership changed recently. DCG Invest Limited holds all 1,100 shares in Momentum Life Limited. DCG Invest is itself owned one-third each by GBMLC Investments Limited, Chepstow Trustee Services Limited, and Spyglass Capital Partners Limited. The Post reported that the sale out of the Australian Blue Inc Group completed in July 2025.
The Post also reported that Momentum Life charged $11m in premiums in the 2024 financial year and recorded a $2.6m loss. Its auditor flagged a material uncertainty about the group's ability to continue as a going concern.
Momentum Life says it is supported by Hannover Re, one of the world's largest reinsurance groups. Reinsurance is an arrangement between insurers rather than a promise to you.
Key facts about Chubb Life: ownership, the Cigna name and its NZ presence
Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited is the licensed life insurer here, trading under that name since March 2023 after decades as Cigna Life Insurance New Zealand Limited.
The Companies Office records it as company 20561, incorporated 13 December 1967 under three successive names. It was Monarch Life Insurance Company of New Zealand Limited, then Cigna Life Insurance New Zealand Limited from 1986, then Chubb Life from 4 March 2023.
So if you hold what you still think of as Cigna funeral insurance or Cigna life cover, it is the same company and the same policy under a new name. The change followed Chubb's acquisition of Cigna's life and non-life businesses in six Asia-Pacific markets on 1 July 2022. The New Zealand business began trading as Chubb in March 2023.
Two points of confusion need clearing up:
- Chubb Insurance New Zealand Limited is a different company. That is Chubb's general insurance arm, separately licensed, and nothing here applies to it.
- Chubb Life's "more than a century" claim is its own framing. Chubb says it has been paying claims in New Zealand for more than a century. The register shows the entity incorporated in 1967, which is 59 years, though it notes pre-1992 name changes may not be recorded.
The ultimate parent is Chubb Limited, listed on the New York Stock Exchange as CB and a component of the S&P 500. In New Zealand, Chubb Life states that more than 250,000 New Zealanders rely on it. It distributes through independent advisers, its own advisers, sales teams, online channels, and business partners.
Financial strength, solvency and claims paid
The gap between the two is wide on ratings and claims disclosure, and almost nil on solvency ratio. A.M. Best rates Chubb Life A (Excellent), and rates Momentum Life B (Fair).
The solvency figures need care, because the headline ratio is the least useful number in them. Both insurers published their position as at 30 June 2026 under the Interim Solvency Standard 2023:
|
Measure, at 30 June 2026 |
Momentum Life |
Chubb Life NZ |
|
Solvency capital |
$8.8m |
$1,349.0m |
|
Adjusted prescribed capital requirement |

|
Adjusted solvency margin |
$0.6m |
$78.5m |
|
Adjusted solvency ratio |
107% |
106.2% |
Momentum Life's ratio is nominally higher. That is not a mistake, and it is not evidence Momentum Life is stronger. A solvency ratio measures capital against the minimum the regulator requires. Both are reporting slightly more than required. What differs is the cushion in dollars: $0.6m against $78.5m.
Claims disclosure is where the two diverge most. Chubb publishes that it paid 96% of claims in 2024, across its Assurance Extra life, trauma, income protection, and TPD coversMomentum Life publishes no claims figures at all.
Policywise checked its financial strength, claims, Fair Conduct Programme (the FMA's conduct and culture obligations for licensed insurers), and complaints pages, the FMA's record, and the register. Treat that as Chubb-focused information rather than a result of Momentum Life lost.
On recognition, Momentum Life states it won the 2024 Reader's Digest Gold Quality Service Award for funeral insurance, after Silver in 2021 and 2022. That is self-reported and unconfirmed against the awarding body. Chubb publishes no comparable consumer award.
What does Momentum Life offer?
Momentum Life offers three products, and all three pay a lump sum on death. They are Funeral Insurance, Quick Life, and Platinum Life Insurance. There is no trauma cover, no income protection, and no health insurance in the range. Momentum Life Limited underwrites all three, and advises only on its own products.
Momentum Life Funeral Insurance
Momentum Life Funeral Insurance pays $3,000 to $30,000 on death and accepts New Zealanders aged 40 to 75 with no health questions. It pays only for accidental death in the first 24 months, and for death from any cause after that. Momentum Life Limited holds the licence and underwrites it.
What it pays, and when, is set out below:
- In the first 24 months, it pays only if death results directly from an accident, and occurs within 90 days of it.
- An accidental death pays three times the benefit, so a $30,000 benefit pays $90,000.
- After 24 months, it pays for death from any cause, including illness and natural causes, with no further stand-down.
- The benefit is capped at $30,000 per person across all Momentum Life funeral policies, with premiums on any excess refunded.
- The money is not tied to the funeral. It goes to you as policy owner, or on your death to your nominated beneficiaries.
Premiums are level and fixed, so they do not rise as you get older. They stop altogether from the 89th birthday, while the cover continues for life. Momentum Life can still change rates across every policy issued under the same offer, on at least 30 days' written notice. Your premium won't rise because you get older, but Momentum Life can still reprice everyone on the same offer with 30 days' notice.
Two discounts sit alongside it. The wording gives additional lives insured a $150 discount each year, with up to four lives on a family policy. The product page also advertises an automatic 10% cashback on premiums paid after 12 months of continuous cover, for policies bought after 22 April 2022.
That cashback does not appear in either layout of the policy wording, so confirm it with Momentum Life in writing before relying on it.
The wording also leaves several things out: there is no terminal illness benefit, no advance payment, no grief counselling benefit, and no premium waiver anywhere in the wording.
There is no indexation provision either, so the benefit you choose is the benefit your family receives decades later. Momentum Life is candid that the policy is not a savings plan, and that total premiums paid could exceed the benefit.
You get a 30-day free look with a full refund if you have not claimed (the two live layouts of the wording disagree on whether the 30 days run from the Acceptance Date or the First Premium Payment Date). Momentum Life says its claims process usually pays out within 24 to 48 hours of receiving the paperwork.
Momentum Life Quick Life and Platinum Life Insurance
Momentum Life's two life products both pay a lump sum on death or terminal illness, and both are underwritten by Momentum Life Limited. They take opposite approaches to your health. Quick Life accepts you automatically. Platinum Life asks health and lifestyle questions and prices the risk.
Quick Life covers New Zealand residents aged 18 to 65, from $50,000 to $300,000 per person, with a $500,000 cap including automatic increases. In exchange for guaranteed acceptance, it pays nothing in the first two years for suicide, intentional self-injury, or a pre-existing medical condition, which the wording defines. Accidental death and new conditions are covered from day one.
Quick Life pays the full benefit early on terminal illness, meaning an illness expected to lead to death within 12 months. The benefit rises 3% a year with a yearly opt-out, and premiums step up with age until they fix at 75.
From age 75, $20,000 of the benefit becomes free. You can take that as a standalone funeral benefit or keep it inside the main cover. Permanent exclusions cover alcohol and drug effects, war, terrorism, criminal activity, and defined dangerous occupations.
Platinum Life Insurance covers ages 18 to 65, with a $50,000 minimum and a maximum set by your age at acceptance: $1,000,000 for ages 18 to 54, $750,000 for ages 55 to 60, and $500,000 for ages 61 to 65.
Cover runs for life, with no premiums after 90. After 24 months in force, the policy is automatically upgraded to include a $10,000 Advance Funeral Payment, paid while the claim is assessed. It forms part of the benefit, and Momentum Life may recover it if the claim is later declined.
Platinum Life also adds a Financial Planning Benefit of up to $3,000 after three years, for advice from a licensed financial planner within 12 months of an accepted claim. That is financial advice, not grief counselling.
Platinum Life has no named pre-existing-condition clause. It relies on the general duty of disclosure instead. Incomplete or misleading information lets Momentum Life decline a claim, cancel the policy, reduce the benefit, or add special conditions.
A fraudulent failure lets it treat the policy as never having existed. Applicants get free interim accidental death cover for up to 30 days while the application is assessed.
What does Chubb Life offer?
Chubb Life offers a standalone funeral policy and two separate life ranges, plus critical illness, income, and expenses cover. The two life ranges are Life & Living, sold direct online, and Assurance Extra, sold through advisers. Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited underwrites all of them.
Chubb Life Funeral Cover
Chubb Life Funeral Cover is a standalone, single-benefit policy, not a rider attached to a life policy. It has guaranteed acceptance with no medicals, a $30,000 cap per person, and a 24-month window covering accidental injury only. Chubb's website states an entry age of 50 to 80, and the policy wording states none.
Two points about this product are worth confirming directly against Chubb's own wording, since both are easy to get wrong:
- It is not a rider on LifeOne. Funeral Cover is its own policy, with its own wording and no tiers or modules. The confusion is understandable. LifeOne is a real and separate Chubb product that does carry an Advanced Funeral Benefit, so the benefit exists on a different policy.
- It is not underwritten, and there are no health questions. Chubb's own page says "No medicals. No fuss." No health-question or underwriting language appears anywhere in the wording.
The 24-month window does the work underwriting would otherwise do. A non-accidental death inside the window pays no claim and refunds 100% of premiums paid. Each cover increase starts its own fresh 24-month window, so topping up restarts the clock on the increase. Momentum Life applies a 24-month stand-down too, so this is not a Chubb-only catch. The two policies are alike here, which is why the real differences sit elsewhere.
Funeral Cover pays the sum insured to your nominated beneficiary, or absent one to the policy owner, or to the estate. As with Momentum Life, the money is not restricted to funeral costs. It is a cash death benefit. The $30,000 cap applies across all Chubb funeral policies on one person, with premiums on any excess refunded.
Premiums are capped rather than stepped, so they do not rise with your age, though Chubb may change rates across the whole class of policies on 30 days' written notice.
The one feature with no Momentum Life equivalent is the Long-Term Care Premium Waiver. It is optional and must be applied for. It requires no premiums outstanding and the cover in force for more than five years.
It also requires an Approved Needs Assessment Agency (the agency that assesses eligibility for rest-home or hospital-level care) to find that the life assured needs rest-home or hospital care. Premiums are then waived and the cover continues for life.
Funeral Cover carries no terminal illness benefit, no grief counselling or financial advice benefit, and no separate advance payment. There is no indexation provision and no surrender or cash value. You get a 30-day free look with a full refund.
Its only permanent exclusions are a sanctions clause, not being a New Zealand permanent resident when cover starts, and misrepresentation. Chubb advertises a 20% discount if you apply with a partner or family member, and says it usually pays within 48 hours of claim approval.
Chubb Life Cover and Assurance Extra: life cover and what it includes
Chubb's life cover does carry funeral and bereavement money, unlike its funeral policy, which has no further cash benefits beyond the death payout. Both life ranges include a Bereavement Support Benefit of up to $25,000, paid immediately on proof of death. That amount is subtracted from the sum insured rather than added to it.
Chubb sells "Life Cover" under both brands, and the benefit sets differ, so it is worth knowing which you are being quoted. Chubb publishes nothing reconciling the two.

Beyond the funeral money, both ranges pay for the other things that arrive when someone dies or is dying:
- Terminal Illness Benefit pays the full sum insured early where death is likely within 12 months. Only one payment is made per person across it and the death benefit.
- Financial and Legal Advice Benefit reimburses up to $2,500 for professional advice on using a paid claim, within 12 months.
- Life Events Benefit lets the sum insured rise without a health assessment on ten qualifying events, capped per event and at 75% of the underwritten sum insured.
Assurance Extra adds three more. Its Advance Terminal Illness Benefit pays 30% of the sum insured, up to $300,000, on diagnosis of a listed condition, deducted from the sum insured.
Its Funeral Transfer Benefit reimburses the lesser of the cost of returning your remains home or $20,000, if you die overseas. A Children's Bereavement Support Benefit reimburses the lesser of the funeral cost or $15,000 if a policyholder's child under 18 dies, at no extra premium.
A Grief Counselling Benefit reimburses your cost. From 6 May 2026 its triggers widened to include a paid terminal illness or complete disablement claim, not only a death.
Chubb's life cover is medically underwritten, and pre-existing conditions are handled at underwriting through special acceptance terms rather than a blanket exclusion. Its single built-in permanent exclusion is intentional self-harm within 13 months of commencement, a non-inflation increase, or reinstatement. Unlike the funeral policy, the life cover can be index-linked. Chubb's Life & Living general terms provide an elective CPI-linked sum insured.
Two mechanics affect what you pay. Assurance Extra premiums run on a selectable review period, from one year up to level to age 100, recalculated at each review.
A Multi-Benefit Discount gives 5% off the risk premium where one policy combines life cover of at least $200,000 with another optional cover group, and 7% with two or more.
Other types of cover from Chubb
Chubb Life sells three other covers that pay for living costs rather than death costs, which is the point of them. None of them carries a funeral or bereavement support benefit as standard. A fourth product, LifeOne, does.
- Critical Illness Cover pays a lump sum on one of 47 defined conditions. It pays either a full benefit or a Diagnosis Benefit of 25% of the sum insured, capped at $75,000, with a 90-day stand-down on five named conditions. It carries a Life Events Benefit, a Financial and Legal Advice Benefit, and a Complimentary Children's Benefit, but no funeral or bereavement benefit. The Chubb critical illness review covers it in full.
- Assurance Extra Income Cover replaces up to 75% of pre-disability income, capped at $25,000 a month, and carries no funeral or bereavement benefit at base level. A Bereavement Support Benefit of three times the monthly sum insured exists only inside the optional Income Cover Extra package. See the Chubb income protection review.
- Expenses Cover is monthly disability cover for household running costs, with separate total-disability tests for employed and non-working lives assured. Its only built-in extras are the Disability Benefit, a Recurrent Disability Benefit, and a Premium Cover specific to this cover. No funeral or bereavement benefit.
- LifeOne is direct-to-consumer term life cover underwritten by Chubb Life, and it is the product that does carry funeral money. Its Advanced Funeral Benefit pays the lesser of 5% of the life cover amount or $15,000, deducted from the cover amount and paid once only. It also has a terminal illness benefit capped at $500,000. Whether LifeOne is still open to new applications is not clear from Chubb's own pages, so confirm with Chubb before planning around it.
The Chubb life insurance review covers the life range in more depth.
Pre-existing conditions, health questions and underwriting
Neither funeral policy asks about your health, and Chubb's life ranges do. Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance and Quick Life accept you automatically, and Chubb's Funeral Cover does the same. Chubb's life cover and Momentum Life's Platinum Life both assess you.
Having a pre-existing condition doesn't automatically rule out cover with either insurer here. Momentum Life's Quick Life excludes pre-existing conditions only for a set two-year period rather than declining you outright. Its Funeral Insurance applies its 24-month stand-down to every cause equally.
Chubb's underwritten life cover handles pre-existing conditions through special acceptance terms set at the time you apply, rather than a blanket exclusion. The guide to life insurance and pre-existing conditions covers this in more detail.
Momentum Life: guaranteed acceptance and the 24-month stand-down
Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance asks nothing about your health, and replaces underwriting with a 24-month stand-down. Acceptance is guaranteed for New Zealanders aged 40 to 75, with no medicals, health questions, or paperwork. Accidental death is covered from day one.
The phrase "pre-existing condition" never appears in the funeral wording, and the 24-month window does the job a health exclusion would. It applies to every cause of death equally, so a condition you already had and one you develop next year are treated the same.
There is no named suicide exclusion either. "Accident" is defined to exclude self-inflicted injury, so a suicide inside the window is not an accidental death, and after 24 months it falls under death from any cause. Quick Life takes a middle path: it accepts you automatically, but it defines pre-existing conditions and excludes them for two years, after which they are covered apart from a short permanent list.
Chubb Life: what the funeral policy asks, and what its life cover asks
Chubb's funeral policy asks nothing, and its life cover asks a great deal. The Funeral Cover wording states no pre-existing-conditions exclusion at all, and its 24-month window is a timing rule rather than a health rule. Chubb's Life Cover, by contrast, is fully medically underwritten.
Chubb's funeral cover is sometimes assumed to be underwritten, but it isn't: acceptance is guaranteed and there are no medicals. That assumption is closer to the truth of Chubb's life cover, which is medically underwritten.
For the underwritten products, the duty of disclosure is what you need to get right. The Ombudsman defines a pre-existing condition as one that exists when you arrange the insurance, and notes a symptom can be one without a diagnosis.
Where material information is not disclosed, the insurer's remedy is to cancel the policy back to the beginning and treat it as if it never existed, even where the omission was accidental.
Outcomes vary once a claim is disputed. The Ombudsman has reported that about 10% of complaints involve non-disclosure, though that figure dates from 2017. One policy avoided over an undisclosed blood-sugar result and heart murmur was reinstated and paid at $66,560.
Another claim, after a death from colon cancer, settled at half the life benefit. A careful, accurate application avoids later disputes, and a good adviser does it with you.
Immediate cover and stand-down periods
On the day you're accepted, the two guaranteed-acceptance funeral policies cover you for accidental death only, with all other causes covered from 24 months. Quick Life, Momentum Life's other guaranteed-acceptance product, is broader from day one: it covers accidental death and new conditions immediately, excluding only suicide, self-injury and pre-existing conditions for the first two year.
The underwritten products work the other way round. Once Chubb accepts you, Life Cover has no stand-down on death, and the only timing rule is the 13-month self-harm exclusion. Momentum Life's Platinum Life is the same, and also gives free interim accidental death cover for up to 30 days while your application is assessed.
So the trade is straightforward once it is laid out. Guaranteed acceptance on the two funeral policies buys certainty about being accepted, and costs you two years of cover for anything but an accident. Underwriting costs you the health questions, and buys you cover from day one.
What each one costs, and how premiums behave over time
Neither insurer publishes a price list, because premiums are quoted individually on your age and cover amount. What you can compare is premium structure, and the two are closer than their wording suggests. Momentum Life's premiums are level and fixed, and Chubb's are capped.
