Super grateful for the support of George and the Policywise team in helping to navigate a difficult health insurance situation. George’s knowledge, guidance and support made a huge difference, and I genuinely don’t think we would have had the same outcome without his help. He was great to deal with throughout, very responsive, and made a stressful situation so much easier to navigate. Really appreciate everything George did and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him and the Policywise team for anyone needing support with their insurance needs.

Absolutely — I’d keep your personality and humour because that makes the review feel genuine, just smooth out the wording and make it easier to read. Jared from Policywise was such a pleasure to work with. The exact insurer I had already been considering applying for, but hadn’t felt confident enough to go ahead with, was actually the insurer he recommended for me — without me mentioning it beforehand! So that gave me a lot of confidence in his recommendation straight away. Not only that, but Jared made the whole application process seem so easy. Honestly, I felt like I hardly did anything 😆. It was like having a personal assistant taking care of all the miscellaneous stuff while I just read everything over and signed to approve it. Throughout the whole process, Jared was always checking in to make sure I actually understood everything and wasn’t just nodding my head along. He explained concepts and jargon without me even having to ask, and if there were certain areas he felt were particularly important for me to understand, he would go back over them and explain them again. What really stood out to me was that he genuinely seemed to want to do the best by me, rather than simply trying to sell me something. I really appreciated having someone who could give me an unbiased opinion from outside the actual insurance companies. Anyway, I could go on, but at the end of it all, Jared was fantastic. I would highly recommend Policywise to anyone who wants honest, unbiased advice and someone who will actually take the time to make sure you understand what you’re getting. If you want, I can also make it  a little more casual and funny, so it sounds even more like a natural Google review rather than a polished testimonial.

Dealing with Chakradhar has been an absolute pleasure. He listened carefully to my needs and then provided a number of options and took me through the details of the different policies very thoroughly. He was highly professional and clearly answered all of my questions, following up directly with the insurers to clarify details as necessary. I would highly recommend Policywise and Chakradhar! Thank you!

We approached Jared for help reviewing our insurances. We were using another advisor and overall, weren't happy with their set and forget mentality. From the get go, we were impressed with Jared's commitment to getting the job done. We're in different parts of the country but caught up on Teams. He worked to transfer the policies across to Policywise, then worked with us on different strategies to get the best value from our cover. He advocated for us on a couple of issues and kept things progressing when life became busy. I recommend Jared to anyone looking for a decent review of this aspect of life admin.

We are incredibly grateful for the support we received from the team at PolicyWise. When NIB declined my partner’s claim for urgently needed neck surgery, we felt overwhelmed and unsure where to turn. Because we had arranged our policy through PolicyWise, we had someone in our corner who was willing to investigate the original application, listen to our concerns, and advocate on our behalf. Calum took the time to understand the circumstances, reviewed the underwriting process, and challenged NIB where things didn’t appear to add up. Throughout the process, we felt heard, supported, and kept informed. Thanks to PolicyWise’s persistence and willingness to champion our case, NIB ultimately overturned their decision. Having an adviser who doesn’t disappear once the policy is in place is invaluable. We can’t thank Calum and the PolicyWise team enough for their professionalism, integrity, and genuine commitment to their clients. We would highly recommend PolicyWise to anyone looking for advisers who will not only help you choose the right insurance but will also stand beside you when you need them most.

Why Nelson residents should work with a financial adviser from Policywise insurance brokers

Nelson sits at the top of the South Island, framed by three national parks, a world-class arts scene, and one of the sunniest climates in New Zealand. As of June 2025, it’s home to around 54,300 people.

Across Nelson, you will find horticulturists, marine industry workers, forestry workers, construction tradespeople, healthcare professionals, teachers, hospitality workers, and small business owners. Many work in industries closely tied to seasonal cycles, commodity prices, or physical demands.

How does the economy look in Nelson?

Nelson has a productive regional economy, built around three key strengths: healthcare, technical services, and labour-heavy occupations. Together, these sectors drive an impressive share of the region's exports and employment.

In 2025, Nelson generated approximately $3,970.8 million of GDP and supported 31,639 filled jobs.

The top industries driving employment across Nelson include:

Nelson is also an important tourism destination. In the first quarter of 2026, tourists spent $529.6 million - an 11.3% increase from previous records. While this backs local jobs, hospitality and tourism employment is inherently seasonal, creating income uncertainty for affected workers.

Even so, the region has a strong employment rate, currently sitting at 67.6%, which is higher than the national rate of 66.7%.

Small-sized businesses prevail, with only 30 of the 6,804 in Nelson employing 100 or more workers. 17.2% have five or fewer employees.

How much do Nelson residents earn and spend?

Incomes in Nelson sit below the national average. The median income in Nelson is $38,800, compared to the national figure of $41,500.

For most households, this income is stretched across:

  • Rent or mortgage repayments
  • Transport and fuel
  • Food, utilities, and family expenses.

Housing is one of the steepest monthly costs for most Nelson households. According to the 2023 Census, there are 22,626 dwellings in Nelson, and demand for housing has risen steadily alongside population growth.

Data from MBIE also shows a clear upward trend in weekly rents:

Year

Mean Weekly Rent

2023

The rent-to-income ratio in the area as of the first quarter of 2026 is more than the national ratio (22.8% vs 19.8%), meaning that rent is more expensive in Nelson.

If your income stops, even for a short time, it can jeopardise your ability to:

  • Pay your mortgage or rent
  • Cover bills and daily costs
  • Support your family.

Your income is one of your most valuable assets and needs protecting.

How income and mortgage protection insurance help

If you cannot work due to illness or injury, income protection and mortgage protection insurance can help keep things stable, providing regular payments while you recover.

Key benefits:

  • Replace a portion of your income
  • Help cover rent, mortgage, and bills
  • Reduce financial stress during recovery

→ You can combine income and mortgage protection for more flexibility

→ Some policies can include redundancy cover.

A Policywise adviser can compare options across insurers and help you choose what suits your situation.

Healthcare pressures in Nelson

Like other regional centres across New Zealand, Nelson's public health system faces ongoing challenges—and this has become increasingly visible in recent years.

The median age in Nelson City is 44 years, well above the national median of 38.1 years. 21.6% of Nelson City's population is aged 65 or older, compared with a national average of about 16%.

Percentage of population by life-cycle age group, Nelson City and New Zealand, 2013–2023 CensusesSource: Stats NZ

As the aging population increases, demand for specialist care rises.

Compounding the issue is the cancer incidence rate per 100,000 people in Nelson and Marlborough (joint 2023 report), which is 316.30.

Cancer incidence rate in New Zealand by health district, 2023, highlighting Nelson MarlboroughSource: Figure.NZ

A 2025 Health New Zealand clinical quality review noted that several specialist services in Nelson and Marlborough are under heavy pressure.

As of April 2025:

  • 4,077 patients were waiting longer than the recommended timeframe for a first specialist assessment
  • 1,416 patients had been approved for treatment but were not treated within the required timeframe.

If you turn to private healthcare to avoid long wait times, the costs can rise quickly. Surgeries may cost tens of thousands of dollars, while specialist appointments, diagnostic scans, cancer treatments, and medications can add extra expense.

Treatment or Test

Indicative Private Cost

Prostate cancer surgery

$24,800 – $31,100

Breast cancer surgery

$8,700 – $27,200

Chemotherapy (course or advanced drugs)

$15,000 – $170,000

Radiation therapy

$20,000 – $70,000

Colonoscopy (diagnostic)

$2,000 – $3,800

Prostate biopsy

$5,500 – $8,000

How health and trauma insurance help

Health insurance enables access to private care faster and reduces out-of-pocket costs. It can help you:

  • Get treatment sooner
  • Avoid public system delays
  • Cover surgery, tests, and specialist care

→ Options can include cover for cancer, mental health, and non-Pharmac drugs.

Trauma (critical illness) insurance provides a lump sum if you are diagnosed with a serious condition. This allows you to:

  • Focus on recovery
  • Cover treatment or time off work
  • Support your family.

Total permanent disability (TPD) insurance provides additional financial support if you become permanently unable to work. It can help you:

  • Manage ongoing living and medical costs
  • Pay for necessary adjustments, such as home modifications
  • Support your family if you can no longer earn an income.

A financial adviser from an insurance broker like Policywise can compare policies from different insurers and help you find cover that fits your needs and budget.

Lifestyle, dependants, and financial risk in Nelson

Nelson has a diverse and growing population with strong family and community character. It is currently home to 14,097 families, spread across 20,577 households.

Number of families and households, Nelson City, 2013–2023 CensusesSource: Stats NZ

Within these numbers, the 2023 Census shows that 36.4% of families are couples with a child/children, while 15.5% are single-parent families.

Percentage of families by family type, Nelson City, 2013–2023 Censuses

For families in Nelson, financial stability means being able to cover costs and protect dependants.

Among 54,300 people, 62.4% are under the dependancy ratio (residents aged 15 or under and 65 or older), and 3,800 people are on beneficiary support.

How life insurance helps protect your family

Life insurance pays a lump sum if you pass away or are diagnosed with a terminal illness, giving your family financial security and peace of mind.

It can help:

  • Pay off the mortgage
  • Cover daily living costs
  • Fund your children's education

→ You can combine life cover with trauma or disability insurance

→ Options include joint and family cover.

Nelson is a region of hardworking people and tight-knit communities, many with significant financial commitments. Whether you are a horticulture worker in the Waimea Plains, a fisheries worker at Nelson Port, a tradesperson in Richmond, a teacher or healthcare worker in Nelson City, or running your own small business, the risk of illness or injury affecting your income is real.

A Policywise financial adviser can help you find the right cover for where you are in life, what you earn, and who depends on you.

Insurance and KiwiSaver

Most people think about insurance and KiwiSaver separately. When combined, they cover you from two angles.

Insurance protects what you have today—your income, your health, and your family's financial stability—so that sudden illness, injury, or death doesn't unravel everything you've worked hard to achieve.

KiwiSaver builds what you'll need tomorrow—through your own contributions, employer contributions (if you're employed), and government contributions (if you qualify). It's how you work toward retirement, get onto the property ladder, or grow long-term financial security.

Explore KiwiSaver investment advice to find the right fund and contribution strategy for your goals.

When both are working for you:

  • If something goes wrong now → insurance steps in
  • Your long-term goals stay on track → KiwiSaver keeps growing

Ready to get both sorted? A Policywise adviser can help you put the right insurance cover in place today and make sure your KiwiSaver is set up to support the future you're working toward.

Business insurance for Nelson owners and operators

Nelson's economy runs on its people. Across agriculture, horticulture, marine industries, construction, healthcare, and professional services, businesses succeed because of capable owners, trusted teams, and consistent day-to-day operations.

That's why the unexpected can hit so hard.

If you (or someone critical to your operation) were suddenly unable to work due to illness, injury, or disability, the effects quickly impact your cashflow, team, clients, and long-term plans.

The right business insurance puts a buffer between disruption and disaster.

Business insurance: Keeps your operation running when you can't. Covers fixed costs while you're temporarily out of action. This includes:

  • Rent and lease payments
  • Staff wages
  • Utilities and general overheads.

Key person insurance: Some people are invaluable. Key person cover protects your business financially if a director, owner, or critical employee is seriously ill, injured, or dies.

It can help you:

  • Stabilise revenue during the disruption
  • Cover recruitment or succession costs
  • Buy time to adapt without making desperate decisions.

Self-employed insurance: When you're self-employed, your income and your ability to work are the same thing. There's no employer sick leave, no team to pick up the slack.

Self-employed income protection replaces a portion of your earnings if illness or injury keeps you off the job. It can also help cover ongoing business costs.

Especially relevant if your work depends on specialist skills, trusted client relationships, or hands-on expertise.

A Policywise adviser can help identify the gaps in your business security and find cover that fits how you operate.

Group insurance for Nelson employers

Across Nelson's key industries, there’s always competition for skilled workers. Experienced candidates are weighing up the full picture: what does this employer offer when things get hard? Group insurance is one of the most practical and cost-effective solutions.

Why Nelson businesses are offering group cover

What it does

Why it matters

Attracts skilled candidates

Benefits packages stand out in a tight labour market

Retains experienced staff

People stay where they feel looked after

Supports employee wellbeing

Faster access to healthcare means quicker recovery and less time off

Builds workplace culture

Shows your team they're valued beyond their output

Accessible pricing

Group rates are often more affordable than individual policies

Some plans also cover pre-existing conditions (for qualifying groups) and extend cover to employees' families.

What group cover can include

Employee health insurance: Employees get faster access to private care without sitting on public waiting lists. They are treated promptly and return to work sooner.

Group life insurance: A lump sum paid to an employee's family if they pass away or receive a terminal diagnosis. It's one of the most valued and straightforward benefits you can offer.

Employee income protection: Replaces a portion of income if an employee can't work due to illness or injury. Reduces financial stress during recovery, meaning a faster return to work and less pressure on the rest of your team.

Group critical illness insurance: A lump sum on diagnosis of a serious condition, such as cancer, heart attack, or stroke. Helps employees focus on recovery without the added burden of financial pressure.

Total permanent disability (TPD): Financial support if an employee is permanently unable to return to work.

Policywise handles the whole process, from comparing options across the market to setting up your cover and supporting your team along the way.
